I study a variety of topics surrounding freshwater ecosystems. Biodiversity is declining more rapidly in freshwater systems that terrestrial and marine systems. Consequently, there is much to learn about how we can better manage freshwater systems. My research focuses on understanding how human-induced changes impact freshwater ecosystems and species, and how we can better balance water resources for societal and ecosystem needs. I use a variety of tools including field surveys, molecular techniques, and spatial/ statistical models to study these issues. Much of my past research has focused on Appalachian rivers and streams, but now my research focuses on southern Great Plains rivers.
